The Changing of the Guards

The soul of any club is the people. Without great people, the club is just a convenient organization for the members to meet and do something and then forget about it.

For many years, FC Swiss Re had 2 outstanding players who also happened to be Members of the Board. One was a defender and the other was a striker. They gave a lot of their free time and energy to the club both on and off the field.

Yesterday, Thursday 24 of September, 2020, was their last football match for FCSR. More than 30 players came to play and to pay their tribute.

Despite the rain and the drop in the temperature, the spirits were high and everyone was happy to be there and to be part of the club history.

Reto, the striker and Stefan, the defender put on the red shirts for the last time. Facing their team was a team made up mostly of the young players from the A team. Some were so young that they were not born yet when FCSR first started to play in these red and blue shirts about 25 years ago.

The match was played in good sportsmanship and the Referee Michel Werly did not have to use his cards.

The coach of the red team, Jesus Otero, had an excellent game plan but the young blue team was up to the task. Late in the second half, first Stefan and then Reto were substituted and they left the field to a long applause from everyone.

When Reto left the field, his place was taken by Rodolfo. It was a great moment in so many ways. From one striker to another. From one captain to another. The changing of the guards was almost complete. When the final whistle went, there was the second changing of the guards.

Stefan presented the number 2 shirt to Michi and Bruno (another former number 2) was there as well. Three defenders. Three legends.

Michi and Rodolfo and the other Board members will bring the club forward and many wonderful things are waiting ahead for us but yesterday was the time to meet and to celebrate with the 2 legends who have given the club a soul.

The soul of any club is the people.

With great people like Stefan and Reto, the club becomes a family.
