Dissapointment in Lindau: Swiss Re 3 - 5 Munich Re

FC Swiss Re suffers a rare defeat in one of the biggest games of the year. In this year’s Clash of the Titans in Lindau, FC Swiss Re fell 5:3 to FC Munich Re in a hard-fought match under intense 32°C heat. After a strong first half that ended 2:2, our team couldn’t hold back a determined Munich Re side. Despite the loss, standout performances, especially from Man of the Match Claudio, made it a memorable event. The tradition continues, and we’re already focused on bringing the trophy back to Zurich next year!

After last year’s unforgettable 6:1 triumph over FC Munich Re, FC Swiss Re returned to the pitch for this year’s much-anticipated Clash of the Titans in Lindau. Under the scorching summer sun and soaring temperatures of 32°C, both teams gave it their all in a spirited and hard-fought match.

Pre-Game foreshadowing: the run-up to this game already held some troubling signs, with the struggle to put together a team. Many absences due to weddings (no, not one of our own obviously, only a mother could love an FCSR member), university courses (some of us need re-education), injuries (age get's us all, it will even get our little Elio one day), tractor accidents (a 200km bike-ride is not a good warm-up pascal) & unknown reasons (Isma??). Claudio astutely observed in the car on the way to the game "we do not seem as motivated this year. The Stimmung is not as hyped. Also, I am swiss". It is a tale as old as time: the golden team find's too much success and start focusing on other things: money, women (& men), and party. There were even rumours that our icelandic talisman did not find his bed untill 5am the night before. Not the ideal pre-game routine.

A rocky first half: from kick-off fc swiss re was not themseleves. An unrecognisable munich re team piled on the pressure and made swiss re look like some little bermudan re-insurer with a 40-person office. Munich re were clearly hungry and wanted revenge. An early swiss re foul on the edge of the box gave munich re their first real chance, which they converted into a clinical cross-header goal to go 0-1 up. Not the start swiss re wanted. A second munich re goal came mid-way through the first half as keeper Magnusson fumbled a weak shot into the goal. 0-2 down. Swiss re was in new territory. However there were some believers who wanted to fight. One in particular: Claudio. He believed so much that he decided to score straight from a corner kick. Clearly someone had been listening to the NEXT principles. 1-2. In an interview before the match, Claudio was quoted saying "if you don't wake up everyday and ask yourself the 4 NEXT questions, what are you doing with your life? Andreas is bringing us into the future and I am the first to follow". This clearly works since not a few minutes later, Claudio had scored his second goal: A tall shot from far out, capitalising on the short stature of the colombian population. Gracias a dios. 2-2. There was hope. The half-time whistle blew.

A long second half: the second half did not start much better. Swiss Re was looking slow and lost, whilst munich re kept the intensity high. the half-time analysis clearly had not helped. After some back and forth, the decisive turning point that picked apart swiss re happend: Cheik's rainman-like calculations of when to take out the Munich Re's player's legs forgot to incorporate one key element: the speed of light. Whilst in Cheik's brain, he had calculated the first contact to be 0.000001 nano-meters outside of the box, light unfortunately only travels 299792456 m/s which means that by the time the light of the contact had reached the referee's eye, it was actually 0.000001 nano-meters inside the box. An elementary error in an otherwise perfect calculation. The munich re player converted their penalty and mentioned in a post-game interview "I knew I would score the penalty: it's not if but how". 2-3. This controversial penatly was soon followed by a sky-high cross-mistakenly-turned-shot by Munich Re that somehow found its way into the swiss re goal. 2-4. With 20 minutes to play, swiss re still believed. Once again, the NEXT-principled Claudio took the reigns and found Souley in the box, who converted the "swiss" gift into a goal. 3-4. There was hope. For a short while. Then Munich Re scored. Then there was less hope. 3-5. A frustrating end with some scrappy fouls led to a sad-sounding final whistle.

Final-whistle: The Munich Re bench, which had a significantly stronger wife/girlfriend presence than the celibate swiss re bench, errupted into cheers. On they cheered and celebrated, as swiss re once had. Swiss Re handed over the trophy and congratualted Munich Re to a well-deserved win. The second edition of what hopefully establishes itself as a years-long tradition was once again a success, this time with a different outcome. Swiss Re 1 - 1 Munich Re. We hope munich re takes good care of the cup, and we look forward to the chance to take it back to Zurich next year.

Post-match shenanigangs: Some motivated individuals from both sides made use of the beatiful surroundings  to spend the night in the wonderful island-town of Lindau. Drank, partied, dance and sung, it was a reminder that it's all for fun.
